Good Foundations

Luke 6:43-49

How is your heart?  There is a direct correlation with what you put into your body and the health of your heart.  So while God is certainly concerned with the wellbeing of your physical body, it is the state of your spiritual heart that matters much to Him.  The Lord is diligently seeking after people whose hearts are perfect.  Jesus is saying in verse 45 that

"The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.  For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks."

Whatever we say comes from the heart.  We have to be careful about the condition of our spiritual heart.  So what do your words say about the kind of treasure you have stored in your heart when you open your mouth?  Does it tell people that your heart is perfect?  The Lord tells us that we will give an account for every careless word we speak.  The things we say behind closed doors!  God sees everything, He hears everything, so how is your heart today?  When you speak, is it evident that your heart is perfect?  What are you hiding in your heart?  A heart that is perfect for Him is a heart that is clean for God.

How do you acquire a contrite heart for God?  It is about how you choose to live your life, who you choose to follow, the choices that you make.  When you wake up in the morning, what do you do first?  I say, "Lord, thank you for this new day.  I am your man.  Nourish my heart today."  I spend time in the Word, the Word of God.  Once you apply the Word of God into your work, you begin to see a transformation.  Spend time in prayer before your heavenly Father.  It is about how you allow God to cultivate good stuff in your heart.  You have to let Him do it.  We claim allegiance to the Lord, but we live contrary to His ways.

What will bring you peace?  There is only one person who can bring you peace.  The Israelites missed it.  It is the Lord Jesus Christ.  How many of you go to Church every Sunday, then to work, to school, but you feel that you need more, you need to dig deeper.  Spend time in the Word of God.  You may not understand the value of digging deeper and deeper; but someday you will.   It will make a huge difference in your everyday life.

How about pleasing God?  Verses 46-48 talk about building a house.

"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord" and do not do what I say?  I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears My Words and puts them into practice.  He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.  When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  But the one who hears my Words but does not put them into practice is like the man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.  The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."

Stability and resilience are important.  A person builds a marriage, a career, a life. We are all building.  Make sure that today, you know where you are building.  Make sure you know where you belong.  Don't build without God.  Build on a solid foundation so that, when the storms of life come, and they will, you have built on a solid foundation.    Invest in eternity.

The Bible tells us there are two eternities, one with God, and one without God.  That eternity without God, there are going to be Church people there, people who were investing, but not in God.  What are you doing?  How is your heart today?  Do you know the Lord Jesus Christ?  If you find that your heart is not correct today, it it your day to go before God.   It is your time to go on your knees before God.  God bless you.
